Most every organization I’ve worked for has needed a little something that wasn’t available in the vast array of available WordPress plugins. Sometimes that little something could be found, but only as a small part of a much larger and not needed plugin.
In these cases I’ve created custom plugins to add just the functionality required, and nothing more, to make the site work as expected. My method of creating plugins is to add the needed functionality with a logical dashboard interface that is focused on content management, not plugin management. I try to make my plugins as invisible as possible in the WordPress dashboard.
Dashboard instructions are included with each plugin so content managers will always have a cheatsheet of reminders to make their job easier.
